Simon has been working in software implementation for more than 20 years. As a self-confessed ‘techie’, it’s one of his passions and the other is building relationships. This makes his role the perfect fit with a mix of technology, consulting and business process management.
I fell into implementation when I was working in Perth for a software company. I was working in support for a small startup where the role just grew and grew. When they needed a consultant in Melbourne they asked if I wanted to go. I thought it was going to be for a couple of years, and 20 years later I'm still here.
When the role at ECI Solutions came up, it appealed to me because I could build it from the ground up, just like I had before. I can build something special together with the customers.
I like technology, and the way it evolves. The technology available over the last 10 years is extraordinary. Today you can use complex technology on your mobile. Everything is instantaneous, owners can see what’s going on with their business in real-time. Technology only seems to get faster. Keeping up with it, and keeping clients informed with how they can get the most out of their investment is exciting to me.
Building relationships is one of the things that gets me out of bed. In a previous job, I had customers that I looked after for 20 years and I've been to their kids’ weddings. Customer relationship building is one of the best things of the job. It’s about driving them forward and making sure they're happy. We want people to be happy and feel that they've got value out of their investment.
I work in the Field Service division of ECI solutions where we look after the ERP solution, e-automate. This industry-specific software product serves the managed print and office technology services industry. I help customers through their product implementation to configure, customise, train and onboard them. Before ECI, I was with a software company that was predominantly accounting and tax, so although it’s a different product it is fundamentally the same process principles.
The product e-automate is big around the globe, and it’s been around for a long time. Once the sales process is done, I'll take over and look after the customer’s needs. Each business has slightly different requirements, so it requires a different approach to every implementation.
Our product, e-automate, does some really cool things - it's just finding the way their business operates to make sure the product works best for them.
Family, travel and food – especially all three at once. We travel well together. It’s one thing the three of us have been doing since my 14-year-old was six months old.
My daughter is in a swim squad, so she's competitively racing most weekends, and doing state finals and championships. We're up at five o'clock most mornings for her swimming. Family is the biggest thing that keeps me going.
But also, I love sport. I love football and cricket. And of course, we're all mad football fans in Melbourne.
